Seaweed Cultivation in Seribu Islands Reinvigorated

The Seribu Islands Maritime, Agriculture, and Food Security Sub-agency is currently promoting seaweed cultivation on Pari Island, South Seribu Islands.

Seaweed cultivation was suspended several years ago and now we are reinvigorating it

Maritime and Fishery Section Head, Elis Rora expressed that the potential for seaweed on Pari Island is very large for a more stable economic development for the local community.

"Seaweed cultivation was suspended several years ago and now we are reinvigorating it. We're working with the Talenta Mutiara Nusantara Foundation," she said, Sunday (2/19).

Seaweed Cultivation on Lancang Island Reactivated

She explained Pari Island was chosen as the demonstration plot as it technically met the requirements needed for seaweed development. Thus far, seaweed seedlings have been planted at three points on Pari Island with up to 150 kilograms of euchema cotonii seeds.

"We will keep monitoring and helping care for this cultivation together. In the future, it will also be developed on other islands that have the potential for seaweed cultivation," he explained.

Seaweed Expert for Talenta Mutiara Nusantara Foundation, Hisworo Ramdani expressed it aims to provide quality and sustainable seaweed seeds to seaweed farmers on Pari Island and other islands. It is also to get productive planting season data and the right cropping pattern from the seaweed garden.

"Hopefully, this action will trigger community activities, especially fisherwomen to become seaweed cultivators as a source of family income," he explained.

Pari Island Seaweed Cultivator, Sartono said he had high hopes after seaweed cultivation in Seribu Islands was revived.

"We support it. Hope it can run well," he stated.
